Katherine Johnson was born on August 26, 1918, in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. From a young age, she showed an exceptional aptitude for mathematics. Joining NASA: The Early Days

In 1952, Katherine Johnson joined what was then the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the precursor to NASA. She started as a computer, a term used at the time to refer to people who performed mathematical calculations. Her job was to calculate and plot the flight paths of test planes.

Breaking the Color Barrier

Despite her exceptional skills, Katherine faced discrimination due to her race and gender. She had to use segregated restrooms and eat in segregated cafeterias. However, she never let these obstacles deter her. In 1962, she was awarded the NASA Lunar Orbit and Module Award for her contributions to the Apollo program. This was a significant moment, as it was one of the first times a woman in her position was recognized for her work.

The Moon Landing and Beyond

Katherine Johnson continued to work at NASA until 1986, contributing to the Space Shuttle program. She retired as a senior mathematician at the age of 69.
