Our Roots: A Brief History
Let's rewind for a moment, shall we?
The Portuguese American Club of Portsmouth was founded in 1982 by a group of passionate Portuguese-Americans who wanted to preserve their cultural heritage and share it with their community. These folks, our founding fathers and mothers, were driven by a desire to keep the traditions, language, and cuisine of their ancestral homeland alive in their new home, Portsmouth, Rhode Island.
Portsmouth, a charming coastal town, might seem like an unlikely place for a thriving Portuguese community. But as we all know, where there are Portuguese, there's warmth, laughter, and plenty of good food! And so, our club was born, bringing a touch of Portugal to the heart of New England.
Our Mission: Keeping Traditions Alive
Now, you might be wondering, what exactly does our club do? Well, let us tell you, we're on a mission! Our primary goal is to preserve and promote Portuguese culture, heritage, and traditions in Portsmouth and beyond. Here's how we do it:
Cultural Events and Celebrations
Throughout the year, we host a variety of events that celebrate our Portuguese heritage. From Festa de Santo António (St. Anthony's Feast) to Festas da Terra (Celebration of the Earth), we love any excuse to gather, dance, and enjoy good food and company.
Language and Education
We believe that language is the key to keeping our culture alive. That's why we offer Portuguese language classes for both kids and adults. Whether you're a beginner or a native speaker looking to improve your skills, we've got you covered.
Community Outreach

Our Clubhouse: A Home Away from Home
Our clubhouse, located at 539 East Main Road, is more than just a building – it's our home away from home. It's where we gather for meetings, events, and just about anything else you can imagine. The clubhouse is also home to our very own Bandeira do Portugal (Flag of Portugal), which flies high and proud alongside the American flag.
